The Brown morning mail announcement went out at 1:00 am Tuesday, Sept. 24. By 8:00 am, all 15 spots were filled. By 8:00 pm on Wednesday, there were 10 names on the wait list for the “Bookbinding Basics” workshop, the first course in the “Three Sundays of Bookbinding” series offered by the Watts program this Fall.
While we wish there had been more space for everyone to participate, there’s no denying the day was a huge success. Artist and graphic designer Suzi Cozzens began with showing samples of artists’ books and the basics of tools, materials, folding, cutting, scoring, and covering boards. Each student left the workshop with a single-stitch pamphlet and two versions of the super-delightful accordion book.
At the end of the workshop, we raffled off a copy of How to Make Books: Fold, Cut & Stitch Your Way to a One-of-a-Kind Book by Esther K. Smith. Or lucky winner, Sarah Durney, will no doubt use the book as a resource as she continues to explore the art of the book.
