The Watts Program is pleased to promote the following upcoming events launched by the John Russell Bartlett Society and its partners.
On September 28th, the R.I. Center for the Book‘s Art of the Book Program will present a keynote lecture by Laura E. Wasowicz, curator of children’s literature at the American Antiquarian Society. In introducing the program’s theme of ‘Beware the Woods: Children’s Books of the Past,” Wasowicz will speak on “Vivid Imaginations: the History of the McGloughlin Bros.” Her talk will profile the firm that pioneered color printing technologies in the mid-19th century and gave us the children’s picture book as we now know it. The event takes place in the MacMillan Reading Room of the John Carter Brown Library at 2:00 p.m. Co-sponsors include American Printing History Association, the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, the JCB, and the John Russell Bartlett Society.
The Magic of Providence
On Saturday, October 5th, the JRBS will partner with the Ticknor Society of Cambridge to organize a field trip to the Providence Public Library and other local bibliophilic destinations. Jordan Goffin, Special Collections Librarian at the PPL, will show materials from the John H. Percival Collection of Books about Magic, while Ticknor member and amateur magician Chris Morgan will demonstrate some of Lewis Carroll’s favorite magic tricks, as well as more recent effects inspired by Carroll’s books. Following Chris’s presentation, participants will have lunch nearby (details to follow), and then do some sightseeing at Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Please RSVP by Oct. 1 to Heather Cole, email@example.com or 617-495-2449.
