Meet the Brown University Library’s Preservation Department team for a behind-the-scenes look at the Rockefeller Library’s Bindery & Repair Unit and the John Hay Library’s Conservation Lab. Located in the basements of the Rock and the Hay Libraries is a staff of box-making, paper-mending, bookbinding professionals.
Michelle Venditelli, Library Preservation Bindery Manager, and Rachel Lapkin, Library Materials Conservator will show past and current projects and discuss the training, skills and opportunities in the field of preservation. Learn about the tools and facilities needed to maintain Brown’s various circulating and special collections, and get a sense for what it means to be a conservator.
FUN FACT: In their work, preservation staff may discover treasures hidden within the special collections. In 2012, the Preservation Department of Brown University Library found a rare engraved print by Paul Revere.
