Breaking the Code (Brown Alumni Magazine)

Check out this recently published article in Brown Alumni Magazine, following a team of students and advisors in their project to decipher a shorthand code embedded in the margins of a book of unknown origin held at the John Carter Brown Library. What makes this shorthand so exciting is that it may belong to Rhode Island’s founder, Roger Williams.

Students met at a John Carter Brown Library and Watts History of the Book Program “Mystery Book” event to discuss the possibility of the project during the fall of 2011. Now it looks like the project is underway, led by a team including the John Carter Brown Library Reference and Manuscripts Librarian, Kimberly Nusco. We’re happy to see this project get the attention it deserves. Can’t wait to see what they come up with!
